Mỹ Sơn is a jungle valley where the Cham kings built brick Hindu temples to Shiva from the 4th to the 13th century. About 70 structures stood here until US bombing in 1969 destroyed most of the largest; around 20 remain, some restored (including work with India's Archaeological Survey from 2016). It is small next to Angkor, and best read with the Cham Museum in Đà Nẵng first. UNESCO 1999.

Mỹ Sơn was the Cham kingdom's sacred valley for nearly a thousand years. Four chapters on the kingdom, the temples, the destruction and the restoration.
1The kingdom of Champa1 min
Champa's rulers based at Trà Kiệu (Simhapura) near Hội An built their religious centre in this valley beneath Mount Cat's Tooth (Hòn Quap), dedicating temples to Shiva as Bhadreshvara, the protector of the kingdom.

The towers (kalan) were built of fired brick fitted without visible mortar — how exactly remains debated — with sandstone for lintels and carvings. Each tower faced east, with a sanctuary housing a linga on a pedestal. Archaeologists label the groups A to N.

French archaeologists of the EFEO rediscovered and recorded the site in the late 19th century. During the American War the valley was a Việt Cộng base; in 1969 US bombing destroyed many towers, including the great A1 temple.

Italian and Polish teams, and from 2016 India's Archaeological Survey, have stabilised and restored groups; UNESCO listed the site in 1999. Paths are cleared of ordnance, but visitors should stay on them. The best carvings are in the Cham Museum in Đà Nẵng.
