Phong Nha – Kẻ Bàng is a UNESCO national park of limestone mountains and hundreds of caves near the Lao border, 45 minutes inland from Đồng Hới. Show caves (Phong Nha by boat, Paradise Cave on walkways) are easy half-days; adventure caves (Dark Cave, Tú Làn, Hang Én) need a guide; Sơn Đoòng, the world's largest cave passage, is a multi-day expedition with a small annual quota. Since 2025 the park is in Quảng Trị province (check).

Deep dive
A park of limestone mountains honeycombed with caves, some only mapped since 2009. The chapters explain how the caves formed, who found them, how the war used them, and how access is controlled today.
1Four hundred million years of limestone1 min
The Kẻ Bàng massif is among the oldest karst areas in Asia, with limestone laid down from the Palaeozoic. Rivers running off the Annamite range dissolved the rock into long river caves such as Phong Nha and vast chambers such as Sơn Đoòng.
The park borders Laos's Hin Nam No reserve; together they form one of the largest limestone forests in Asia, with primates such as langurs and gibbons.

2Mapping the caves1 min
Local people knew many caves for generations. Systematic mapping began with British–Vietnamese expeditions from the 1990s. In 1991 a local man, Hồ Khanh, found the entrance of Sơn Đoòng; its scale was surveyed only in 2009.
Paradise Cave (Thiên Đường) was surveyed in 2005 and opened with walkways in 2010. Hang Én, with its giant entrance and beach inside, is now an overnight trek.

3Caves in wartime1 min
The Hồ Chí Minh Trail crossed this region; caves served as hospitals, storage and shelters from bombing. Phong Nha cave itself was used as a store and field hospital, and the Xuân Sơn ferry crossing nearby was heavily bombed.
Memorials such as the Tám Cô cave remember young volunteers killed there in 1972.

Show caves are open to all with tickets; adventure caves are restricted to licensed operators with guides, safety teams and quotas. Sơn Đoòng expeditions run with a small annual limit and are booked far ahead.
Floods from September to December close most caves. Plan the park for February to August and choose operators that publish their licences.
