Ho Chi Minh City, still widely called Saigon, is Vietnam's largest city and its main commercial centre. The visitor core is District 1, with most museums, markets and restaurants within a short taxi ride. It is hot all year and the streets are dense with motorbikes.

Where to sleep

District 1 (Ben Nghe / Pham Ngu Lao)

Closest to sights, markets and transport; Pham Ngu Lao is the budget backpacker zone.

District 3

Quieter residential streets with cafes, still close to District 1.

Getting around

Ride-hailing cars and motorbike taxis are the easiest option; taxis are metered. Crossing the street means walking steadily and letting traffic flow around you.

Watch out

  • Phone and bag snatching from motorbikes is common: keep bags on the side away from the road.
  • Use ride-hailing apps or well-known metered taxi brands to avoid fare disputes.
  • Heat and afternoon rain in the wet season: plan indoor stops for the middle of the day.
