The Củ Chi district holds the remains of about 250 km of tunnels dug by Việt Minh and then Việt Cộng fighters from the late 1940s to 1975, a base under the noses of US forces. Two sites are open: Bến Đình (closer, more commercial) and Bến Dược (farther, with a memorial temple). Sections have been widened for visitors; they are still hot, dark and tight.

Tunnels began in the late 1940s against the French and expanded in the 1960s to a network of about 250 km across Củ Chi district, in three levels with kitchens, meeting rooms, wells and hidden exits into rivers.

The US 25th Infantry Division set up its base at Đồng Dù, on top of the network. Operations such as Crimp (1966) and Cedar Falls (1967) tried to destroy it; 'tunnel rats' went in with pistols and torches.

Fighters and villagers lived for days underground, cooking on smokeless Hoàng Cầm stoves and emerging at night to farm. Disease, heat and bombing killed many.

Bến Đình and Bến Dược show widened sections, trap displays and a memorial temple. The shooting range is a commercial add-on. Visit early and read the war from both the site and the War Remnants Museum in the city.
