The delta is the Mekong's last 200 km: nine river mouths, canals, orchards and rice fields that feed the country. From Saigon, day tours go to Mỹ Tho and Bến Tre for rowing boats, coconut-candy workshops and honey tea — pleasant but packaged. The working river life — Cái Răng's wholesale floating market, canal villages, orchard homestays — needs a night, because it happens at dawn.

1Life on the water1 min
Canals (kênh, rạch) are older than roads here; houses face the water, and markets formed where boats met. Wholesale floating markets at Cái Răng and Phong Điền still trade fruit and vegetables at dawn, advertising what each boat sells on a pole (cây bẹo).

2Orchards and coconuts1 min
Bến Tre is coconut country; Vĩnh Long and Cái Bè are known for orchards and homestays on islands in the river. Fruit seasons vary: rambutan and mangosteen in mid-year, durian from May, mangoes in spring.

3Khmer, Cham and Chinese1 min
Khmer Krom pagodas with curved roofs dot Sóc Trăng and Trà Vinh; Cham Muslim villages with mosques line the river near Châu Đốc; Chinese temples stand in every market town.
4A changing delta1 min
Dams upstream trap sediment, sand mining deepens channels and saltwater intrudes further each dry season; parts of the delta are sinking by centimetres a year. Bridges and highways have shortened trips from Saigon, and many markets have moved ashore. Go soon, stay a night, and ask boat operators how their river is changing.
