Huế
Huế needs two nights, not a stop: the Imperial City from opening on day one, the royal tombs by car before 11:00 on day two, and the Hải Vân Pass to Hội An when you leave; avoid October–November rains.
Huế was the Nguyễn dynasty's capital from 1802 to 1945. Its sights are in two places: the walled Citadel and Imperial City on the north bank, and a string of royal tombs and pagodas spread 5–12 km up the Perfume River. The city is slow and green, its food is the spiciest in the country, and its rain is the heaviest. Trips go wrong when the Imperial City is squeezed into two hours at noon, when the tombs are cycled in 35 °C heat, or when a day is lost to the autumn floods.

- HUI is 15 km south: 25–35 minutes by car to the south bank. Flights are mostly domestic (Hanoi, Saigon); the risk is a late domestic arrival to a homestay that locks at 22:30.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Tombs and temples: Covered shoulders and knees; hats off in shrines; do not step on thresholds.
- Monks and nuns: Do not touch; women should not hand things directly to a monk. Keep voices low in working pagodas.
- Altars: Do not photograph worshippers close up or pose in front of an altar; ask first.
- Vegetarian days: On the 1st and 15th of the lunar month many families eat vegetarian; do not be surprised if a homestay kitchen does too.
- Tipping: Tip drivers and guides on tomb days; round up boats and cyclos; nothing at stalls.
- Haggling: Haggle with a smile at Đông Ba and with boat drivers; never at food stalls with a posted menu.
- War history: 1968 is a living memory for older people on all sides; listen more than you ask, and do not joke about it.
