The Imperial City is a walled square about 600 m a side inside the Citadel, entered through Ngọ Môn. A central axis runs north past the Thái Hòa throne hall to the Forbidden Purple City, reserved for the emperor and his household.

Ngọ Môn (1833) has five gates; the central one was for the emperor. On its pavilion Bảo Đại abdicated in 1945. Thái Hòa palace, with its lacquered columns, held coronations and court audiences.

In front of the Thế Miếu temple stand nine bronze urns cast in the 1830s, decorated with rivers, mountains, animals and weapons of the country — a catalogue of the realm in bronze.
