  • Accommodation must register foreign guests; hotels do it for you, but private rentals should too, so ask your host.
  • Croatia (Dubrovnik) and Albania (Shkodër) borders can have long queues in summer; allow extra time.

  • Dress modestly in monasteries and churches; cover shoulders and knees.
  • Do not walk in swimwear away from the beach in town centres.
  • Pace is relaxed: long coffees and slow service are normal.

Safety

  • Mountain roads are narrow, with sharp bends and tunnels; drive slowly and avoid night driving.
  • Summer heat and wildfire risk on the coast; follow local closures.
  • Hiking in Durmitor and Prokletije: weather changes quickly; carry layers and tell someone your route.
  • Emergency: 112.
