Budva is Montenegro's busiest resort: a small walled old town on a peninsula, a marina, and about 35 beaches of mostly pebble along the Budva Riviera. It is a beach-and-nightlife base rather than a sightseeing city, and summer prices and crowds are the highest on the coast. Two nights covers the old town, Mogren and one boat or day trip; add nights only if you want beach time.

Getting around

The centre is about 2 km² and walkable end to end in roughly 20 minutes; the promenade has a quieter lane by the water. Driving inside Budva in summer is slow and parking near the old town is scarce and expensive, so leave the car at your accommodation. Taxis are plentiful but not cheap: about €5 for a ride within town, and meters or rate cards vary by company. Tourist boats leave the old-town harbour for nearby beaches and Sveti Nikola island (about €6–20).

Watch out

Safety

Budva is generally safe for tourists; the real risks are summer bar overcharging, crowded beaches and traffic, not violent crime. Use the 112 emergency number and keep cash amounts visible when paying.
  • Ask for the bill and say the amount out loud when you hand over cash: overcharging and short-change disputes are a known problem in summer bars.
  • Confirm your room has running water; summer supply in Budva has been unreliable.
  • Old-town ATMs are scarce — withdraw outside the walls.
  • July–August traffic on the coast road is heavy; allow extra time for airport runs and the Croatian border.
  • Beaches are mostly pebble: bring or buy water shoes.
