Slovenia is small, so distances are short, but mountain and valley bus services are thin and slow. What breaks trips is day-tripping everything from Ljubljana, arriving at Bled at midday in August, and driving the high passes in winter. Use two or three bases, start early at the popular lakes and gorges, and hire a car for the Alps.

Safety

  • Emergency: 112 (the EU number) works everywhere.
  • Mountains: storms build fast on summer afternoons; start early and turn back if weather changes.
  • River swimming in the Soča is cold and fast: swim only where it is calm and signed.
  • Pickpockets are rare but present in Ljubljana's busy centre and trains.

Slovenia links south to Croatia, north to Austria and west to Italy; Ljubljana to Zagreb or Trieste is a short trip.
