Kamnik is a small medieval town 25 km north of Ljubljana, once a rival of Ljubljana and Kranj for trade in Carniola. Its pedestrian core of Šutna and Glavni trg takes a couple of hours; the real draw is the Kamniška Bistrica valley and the Velika Planina pasture above it. Trains run hourly on weekdays only, buses run all week, and most visitors see the town as a half-day from Ljubljana.

Getting around

The Old Town is walkable in 15 minutes end to end. Local buses (Kam-Bus) reach the valley and nearby villages but run infrequently; a car or taxi is easier for Velika Planina and the springs. Bikes can be rented at the tourist information office on Glavni trg.

Kamnik is a low-risk small town; the real hazards are mountain weather, unmarked trail junctions and icy paths in winter. Keep to marked trails and carry water.
  • Trains from Ljubljana run on weekdays only; weekends and holidays have no service.
  • Mountain roads above the valley are service roads, closed to public traffic.
  • Mountain huts and the Velika Planina cable car have seasonal hours: check before you go.
  • Summer thunderstorms build fast in the Kamnik Alps; start hikes early.
