First trip: 2 nights in Bratislava (often via Vienna airport), then the train east to the High Tatras for 3–4 nights, and Košice for 2 if you continue east; move by rail, and hire a car only for the mountain valleys.
Slovakia is a long, narrow country: Bratislava sits at the western tip next to Vienna, and the mountains and castles lie several hours east by train. What breaks trips is treating the Tatras as a day trip from Bratislava, and hiking high trails that are closed for part of the year. Give the mountains their own base, check seasonal trail closures, and use Vienna as the air gateway when flights to Bratislava do not fit.

Safety

- Mountains: Tatra weather changes fast; start early, check the forecast and carry layers. Mountain rescue can be charged without insurance.
- Pickpockets work the Bratislava Old Town and busy trains.
- Some governments advise care near the Ukrainian border; check your own government's advice before going far east.
Bratislava is minutes from Vienna and on the line to Budapest; the Tatras border Poland's Zakopane.
