Kazakhstan is the ninth-largest country by area; most visitors see one region. Almaty in the south-east is the easiest base: a big airport, a walkable centre, and mountains within an hour. The trips that fail try to cover Almaty, Charyn, Kolsai and Astana in a week by road, or treat the winter as the summer: ice, smog and closed mountain roads. Fly into Astana for the modern government quarter and the winter-to-summer contrast; give it two nights, then move on.
Use Shymkent as a southern base for Turkistan and the Aksu-Zhabagly area; one night is enough in the city.
Come to Turkistan for the Yasawi Mausoleum, a major Central Asian pilgrimage site; a half day to one night is enough.
Routes that work
Almaty and mountains, 6 nights
Keep the Almaty bed; leave big bags there on the Charyn day.
- Fly, do not drive, between Almaty and Astana: it is about 1,200 km, 2 hours by air, and a day and a half by road.
- Mountain days go first in good weather: Medeu, Shymbulak and lake roads close in storms and snow, and Charyn is best in the cool morning.
- Avoid the middle of the summer heat (July–August) for canyons and the depths of winter (Dec–Feb) for city walking unless you plan to ski.

Country rules
- Visa-free entry applies to many nationalities, usually up to 30 days; check your own passport on the official government portal before you book, and keep your entry record.
- Use a ride-hailing app (Yandex Go or inDrive) or the airport rank; do not accept unmarked cars offered in the arrivals hall.
- Some mountain areas near the Kyrgyz and Chinese borders need a border-zone permit; ask your driver or the park office before you go.
Etiquette
- Greet with a handshake and speak politely to older people; remove your shoes when entering a home.
- Dress covered at mosques and cathedrals; do not photograph government buildings, soldiers or police.
- Tip about 10% in restaurants; agree taxi fares before you ride if you are not using an app.

- The tenge (KZT) is used everywhere; cards work in Almaty shops, hotels and restaurants; bazaars and rural areas need cash.
- Domestic payment apps such as Kaspi are common; foreign cards work at most terminals and ATMs.
- Ride-hailing apps show the fare upfront; keep small notes for taxi tips and bazaar stalls.

Safety
- Traffic and icy pavements are the main daily risks: cross at lights, use the app-hailed car after dark, and wear shoes with grip in winter.
- Winter smog (Nov–Feb) can reach unhealthy levels in Almaty; check an air-quality app and plan indoor stops.
- The region is seismically active: know the exit of your hotel and follow local advice in an earthquake.
- Emergency: 112 (single number), 101 fire, 102 police, 103 ambulance.
- Check your own government's travel advice before you book; advisories for neighbouring countries and border areas can affect your plans.
