Ross and Cromarty is the wedge of the Highlands north and west of Inverness: a settled east coast of towns and firth-side villages, a scattered west coast of lochs and inlets, and empty moor and mountain between. Public transport reaches the east coast and the two rail lines; everything else needs a car. It suits a focused visit — two or three nights for one coast, five nights to cover both.
