The Highlands are the northern and northwestern part of Scotland: mountains, lochs, castles and single-track roads, with few towns and long distances between them. Trains and buses link the main towns but barely reach the glens and villages, so most visitors drive. Base in Inverness for the north and Loch Ness, Fort William for Ben Nevis and Glencoe, or Oban for Argyll and the ferries. Three nights is the minimum that covers one area without spending it all in the car.
