Lewis is the low-lying northern two-thirds of one long island; Harris is the rugged southern third, joined by road over the hills. Almost everything worth seeing sits on a single loop west and north of Stornoway: the Callanish stones, Dun Carloway broch, the Arnol blackhouse and the Butt of Lewis. Distances are short but buses are thin and Sunday service is effectively nil, so a car turns a three-day slog into two easy days.

Midges are fierce on still summer evenings near lochs and peat bog; bring repellent.

Lewis: Gulf Stream keeps winters mild but wet and windy; May to August has the longest days and the best odds of dry weather. Rain and wind arrive any month.

Summer is also midge season and the ferry and bed peak; book CalMac sailings ahead even as a foot passenger.
