The Outer Hebrides are a 200 km island chain off Scotland's west coast, reached by ferry or small plane, where single-track roads, Neolithic standing stones, blackhouse villages and empty beaches reward slow travel. This is not a day-trip region: the minimum that works is 4 nights, and 7 lets you cross from Barra to Stornoway without rushing. Come for the archaeology, the machair and the quiet; skip it if you want restaurants, nightlife or reliable summer sun.

- Summer is short, May to mid-September, with long days and midges. Winter is mild for the latitude but windy and dark; ferries and flights run year-round because they are lifeline services.
Atlantic weather changes fast: a dry morning can turn to horizontal rain by lunch. Layers and waterproofs matter more than a forecast.
