Rules in force · 6
  • South Asia ↗Trekking regions, border districts and several Indian states need separate permits on top of the visa; check the permit before you book transport into them.
  • South Asia ↗Remove shoes (and in many Jain and Hindu temples, leather) before entering; cover shoulders and legs; ask before photographing people or rituals.
  • Maldives ↗Seaplane transfers fly in daylight only, and the last departure is set by sunset for that day; a late landing at Velana usually means a night on land and the seaplane next morning.
  • Maldives ↗Local islands follow Islamic norms: alcohol is not sold, cover shoulders and knees in the village, and swimwear is for the designated tourist beach only.
  • Maldives ↗Submit the online Traveller Declaration within 96 hours before arrival; airlines and immigration ask for the confirmation.
  • Malé Atoll ↗Open-water speedboat crossings are the first thing cancelled when the sea turns rough: keep a spare night in Malé when you have a same-day international flight.

Decide

Who it suits, the trade-offs and when to go

Overview

The city in one paragraph, who it fits, and how many days it takes.

Malé is a crowded island about 2 km long, with narrow streets, scooters and no shade. Most visitors pass through it on the way to a resort or a local island. The trips that go wrong are the ones that treat the capital as a stopover of minutes: a late flight, a seaplane that has stopped for the day, or a public ferry that leaves once a day. Four clusters cover Malé and Hulhumalé.

Fits

  • Arrival and departure nights
  • Short city stops
  • Market and mosque walkers

Does not fit

  • Beach holidays (no beach for swimming)
  • Strollers and wheelchairs
  • Midday walkers
1 days
Museum and Sultan Park, fish market at dawn, ferry or taxi to the airport
2 days
Museum quarter + fish market + Artificial Beach at sunset; Hulhumalé beach the second morning
3 days
Malé 2 nights + one local-island day trip by ferry
Don't confuse
Malé is the capital island; the airport is on Hulhulé, and Hulhumalé is the newer town next to it, linked by the Sinamalé bridge.
Where’s whatTap an area for what it is like and who it suits. Shapes follow this guide’s walking areas and places, not official boundaries.

Hover, tap or tab to an area to see what it is like. Pins are sleep areas; arrows at the edge point to the airport.

Off the map: Velana International Airport (MLE) (20–35 min by the usual route).

Where’s what, as a list:

  • Sultan Park & National Museum: Morning cluster: the National Museum, Sultan Park and the Grand Friday Mosque exteriors on one flat, shadeless walk; done before the noon sun.
  • Fish market & waterfront: Early-morning cluster: the fish market and the local produce market from 06:00, harbour and ferry jetties next door; quiet after lunch.
  • Artificial Beach & Republic Square: Sunset cluster: the south-east waterfront with the Artificial Beach and the Republic Square; locals gather after 17:00, and the wind is the only shade.
  • Hulhumalé beachfront: Evening base for arrival and departure nights: a planned town on reclaimed land next to the airport, wide pavements, a public beach and guesthouses.
  • Sleep area Hulhumalé beach side: suits Families, older travellers, price band $.
  • Sleep area Malé city centre (Galolhu / Henveiru): suits Families, price band $$.
  • Velana International Airport (MLE), 20–35 min by the usual route.

Decide

The honest trade-off: what you will enjoy, what will wear you down.

You will like

  • Fish market at dawn
  • Short distances
  • A cheap stopover night

You will hate

  • Heat with no shade
  • Scooters on narrow streets
  • Crowds

Arrive & move

Getting in, getting around, and your bags

Arrive

Gateways

Each gateway has its own airport-to-bed page with timings and the last safe connection.

Move

The default way around, when a pass pays off, and when the last trains go.

Default
Walk inside a cluster; taxi between clusters; the airport ferry or a taxi over the Sinamalé bridge to the airport.
Passes
No pass. Malé taxis charge a set fare for most rides; agree it or check the sign before you get in.
Last trains
No rail; taxis and the airport ferry cover the night, with fewer sailings after dark.

Luggage

Where big bags are a problem, and how to get rid of them for the day.

Rule

Malé pavements are narrow and shared with scooters: large bags go from the taxi to the door, never on a walk.
Lockers
Few public lockers; hotels hold bags after check-out.
Forwarding
Resorts collect bags at the jetty or seaplane terminal; local-island guesthouses do not forward.
Dead zone
Late departures: ask the hotel to hold bags and for a shower room.
