Malé is the transfer hub, not the destination: give it one night when your flight will not connect, and use a morning for the museum, fish market and mosque before the heat.

Malé is a crowded island about 2 km long, with narrow streets, scooters and no shade. Most visitors pass through it on the way to a resort or a local island. The trips that go wrong are the ones that treat the capital as a stopover of minutes: a late flight, a seaplane that has stopped for the day, or a public ferry that leaves once a day. Four clusters cover Malé and Hulhumalé.

Velana International Airport (MLE)
MLE to a Malé or Hulhumalé bed: an airport taxi over the Sinamalé bridge or the short airport ferry, 15–35 minutes; the hard limit is not this ride but the last seaplane, speedboat or public ferry to your island, which stops before dark.

Get around

Walk inside a cluster; taxi between clusters; the airport ferry or a taxi over the Sinamalé bridge to the airport.

Passes
No pass. Malé taxis charge a set fare for most rides; agree it or check the sign before you get in.
Late at night
No rail; taxis and the airport ferry cover the night, with fewer sailings after dark.

    Go at dawn, when the tuna lands and the market is busiest; wear shoes that can get wet, and walk on to the produce market and breakfast before 09:30.

    Go mid-morning or late afternoon for AC and an hour of history; check the opening days before you walk over, because weekly closing days differ.

Long-running café on Chaandhanee Magu with AC, coffee and short eats; use it as the midday shade stop, and expect shorter hours during Ramadan.

Sleep

Hulhumalé beach side
The easy arrival and departure night: 10–15 minutes from the airport by road, wider pavements, a public beach, and guesthouses that accept late check-in.
Malé city centre (Galolhu / Henveiru)
The night before an early ferry or seaplane: everything is a walk away, but choose a hotel with a 24h desk and a door the taxi can reach.

Language

Dhivehi is the national language, written right to left in the Thaana script. English is taught in schools and spoken almost universally in tourism and government.

  • 'Assalaamu alaikum' is the usual greeting; 'shukuriyaa' means thank you.
  • Viber and WhatsApp for guesthouses and boat operators.

Etiquette, safety and scams

Etiquette

  • Greeting: 'Assalaamu alaikum' and a handshake between same-sex adults; avoid: Offering a hand to the opposite sex first
  • Dress in villages: Shoulders and knees covered; avoid: Swimwear off the tourist beach
  • Mosques: Visit only when invited or at opening hours for visitors, shoes off, covered; avoid: Entering during prayers
  • Ramadan: Eat and drink out of sight on local islands by day; avoid: Public eating in daylight
  • Homes: Shoes off at the door; avoid: Refusing tea and short eats
  • Reefs: Float, do not stand; avoid: Touching or feeding marine life

Red lines

  • Mosques: cover shoulders and knees, shoes off, no entry during prayers unless invited.
  • No alcohol in Malé or on local islands; do not bring it in.
  • Ask before photographing people, especially women and prayer scenes.

  • Unregistered guesthouses and 'deals' on social media: Book registered properties; the visa needs a booking at registered accommodation.
  • Hidden taxes and fees: Ask for prices including service charge, TGST, green tax and transfers.
  • Airport touts selling transfers: Your resort or guesthouse meets you at its counter; do not pay strangers.
  • Fake Traveller Declaration sites: IMUGA at imuga.immigration.gov.mv is free.
  • Excursion no-shows in rough weather: Pay on the day of the trip, not in advance, in the wet season.
