Best time to visit Nairobi: weather, crowds and events by month

Nairobi sits at about 1,700 m, so it never gets the coastal heat. Days stay mild all year; what changes is rain, cloud and how cold the evenings feel. The city has two wet seasons: the long rains from late March into May, and the short rains from roughly late October into December.

January and February are the cleanest bet: dry, sunny, green from the previous rains, and warm enough for a T-shirt by day. September and October are similar and slightly quieter. June, July and August are dry but often grey and cool, with drizzle on some days and evenings that need a jacket. November is the wettest of the short-rains months; April is the wettest of the year.

In the dry months, plan outdoor blocks for the morning. Nairobi National Park, the Sheldrick elephant orphanage and the Ngong Hills are best before about 11am, when cloud and heat build. Afternoon showers in the wet months usually last an hour or two, so a museum, a mall or a long lunch is a sensible fallback rather than a wasted day.

June to August is the surprise for first-time visitors: it is dry, but the city can sit under low cloud for days and evenings drop to around 10–14 °C. That is fine for safaris — animals are easier to spot in thin bush — but you will want a warm layer for 6am departures. January and February are the reverse: bright, warm and dusty, with the clearest long views.

Nairobi itself is a business city, so hotel demand tracks work travel more than tourism. The squeeze comes from the safari calendar: July to early October, when Mara-bound travellers pass through, and the Christmas–New Year week, when Kenyans head to the coast and lodges fill. Book Nairobi hotels a few weeks ahead in those windows and several months ahead for anything tied to a Mara flight.

April, May and November are the value months. City hotels discount, flights have more seats, and parks are quiet. The trade-off is rain and, in April, some camps and coast hotels closing. If your trip is Nairobi-only, the wet months are workable — the city rarely floods for long — but if you are adding a safari, the dry windows are worth the higher price.

Kenyan public holidays close offices and banks, and long weekends push Nairobi families to Naivasha, Nakuru and the coast. The dates that matter most for a visitor are Easter (March or April, moving — check), Madaraka Day on 1 June, Mashujaa Day on 20 October, Jamhuri Day on 12 December and the Christmas–New Year week. Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha follow the lunar calendar and move each year — check.

Ramadan affects Mombasa and Lamu more than Nairobi, but some Muslim-owned restaurants in the city change hours. If a public holiday falls on a Tuesday or Thursday, expect the Monday or Friday to become a travel day, with fuller roads out of the city and higher lodge rates at Naivasha and Nakuru.

Prices below are 2026 estimates for a mid-range trip and move with the season. The gap between low and high season in Nairobi is smaller than on the coast or in the Mara, because city hotels serve business travellers year-round. Your biggest saving from travelling in April, May or November comes from flights and safari lodges, not the Nairobi hotel itself.

Nairobi National Park entry, airport transfers and museum tickets are fixed year-round, so shifting your dates does not change them. Where timing pays is accommodation and airfare: a low-season week can cut a mid-range daily budget by roughly a third compared with August.

Build one wet-weather day into any itinerary between late March and May or in November. Rain in Nairobi tends to arrive mid-afternoon and clear by evening, so a morning game drive plus an indoor afternoon usually works. Traffic is heavy in the morning and from about 4pm; schedule transfers outside those windows where you can.

Altitude is mild but real: drink more water than usual for the first day or two, and take early starts slowly. If you are connecting to the coast or the Mara, remember the coast is hot and humid year-round while the Mara is cooler than Nairobi at night — pack for both.
