Taxi and ride-hail
The simplest arrival is a car that meets you in the arrivals hall with your name. Hotels and lodges arrange this; airport transfer desks inside the terminal also sell fixed-price rides. You pay more than an app ride, and you skip the queue, the haggling and the walk to the pickup point.
Uber and Bolt both work at JKIA and are usually the cheapest door-to-door option. You need a working SIM or eSIM and data before you request the car. Pickup points are signposted outside the terminal; follow the app pin rather than a driver who waves you over. Match the plate number before you get in.
At the official taxi rank, agree the total fare in KES before you put your bag in the boot. If the price sounds wrong, walk to the next car. Drivers generally accept cash; some take M-Pesa, Kenya's mobile money, which is worth setting up if you will be in the country for a while.

Bus and matatu
An airport shuttle bus runs between JKIA and the city centre for a fraction of a taxi fare. It is slow, stops along Mombasa Road and is not built for large suitcases. It makes sense for a solo traveller with a backpack and daylight to spare.
Matatus, the local minibuses, also serve the airport corridor and cost under KES 100. They are how many Kenyans commute, but routes, stops and crowding make them a poor first arrival with luggage. If you use one, keep your bag on your lap and know your stop before you board.

Is there a train from the airport?
No. JKIA has no rail link. Nairobi's main rail service, the SGR Madaraka Express to Mombasa, leaves from Syokimau station about 20 km from the city centre and on the far side of the airport corridor. It is not a city transfer.
If your plan is to head straight for the coast, you can in theory go from JKIA to Syokimau by road and catch the train. In practice, allow a wide buffer: the trip across can take an hour or more in traffic, and you should be at the station about an hour before departure for security. Most travellers spend a night in Nairobi instead.

Traffic is the whole story. Mombasa Road and the CBD both jam hard at peak times, so a 15–20 km run can take twice as long as the map suggests. If you have a domestic flight from Wilson Airport, which sits on the other side of the city, leave a big margin.
Arriving at night is common on long-haul flights. Pre-book a car rather than sorting one out at the kerb. Keep your hotel's phone number saved, and share your live location with someone at home.
