Nairobi itinerary: 1, 2 and 3 days

Nairobi is a working capital with a national park on its edge, so the question is not how much there is to see but how much driving you will accept. Pick by how many nights you actually have on the ground, not by arrival day.

If you land in the evening and fly to the Mara the next afternoon, you have one usable morning. If you have a full day plus a morning, you can do the park and Karen. Three days is the first length where a day trip outside the city makes sense.

Choose one cluster and do it properly. The park cluster means an early start: gates open at first light and the animals are most active before the heat. You need a vehicle with a driver-guide; the park is not walkable and self-drive is possible but not the easy option. Expect two to three hours of game driving, with the city skyline behind the plains.

The Karen cluster sits west of the centre and groups well: the Giraffe Centre, the Karen Blixen Museum and the Sheldrick elephant orphanage are close to each other. Sheldrick visits are by booked time slot only, usually a single morning window, so book online before you fly. The Giraffe Centre and the museum are straightforward walk-in stops.

If you would rather stay central, the Nairobi National Museum and the surrounding gardens fill a half day, and the city market and a long lunch fill the rest. Do not try to combine the park with Karen on one day unless you accept a rushed afternoon.

Day 1: Nairobi National Park in the morning, then the Karen sights after lunch. This is the classic first-day pattern and it works because both are on the same side of the city. Eat dinner near your hotel rather than crossing town.

Day 2: the Nairobi National Museum in the morning, then the city centre on foot — the market, the railway museum area and a proper lunch. If you have energy left, add the Giraffe Centre if you skipped it, or a viewpoint over the park at sunset.

Two days also leaves room for the thing most itineraries miss: an afternoon with nothing scheduled. Nairobi rewards a slow lunch more than a third museum.

Keep the two-day plan and add a half-day or full-day trip. The nearest options are the Kiambu area to the north-west, with coffee farms and quiet roads, and the Rift Valley escarpment viewpoints to the north-west along the Naivasha road, which is a long half day by car.

If you are heading to the Mara or Naivasha anyway, do not spend day 3 on a trip in the same direction — move the safari forward instead and use the extra Nairobi day at the end as a buffer before your international flight. That buffer is worth more than a third city sight.

A third day is also the point where a day trip to Lake Nakuru becomes feasible, but it is a long drive each way and better done as an overnight on the way to the Rift Valley.

The big variable is a car and driver. Visitors rarely use matatus for sightseeing, so most days are priced as a vehicle plus guide, split across your group. Park entry for non-residents is charged per person per day and is separate from the vehicle fee; rates change, so confirm before you pay.

Museum and centre entries are modest. Food ranges from street-level to hotel restaurants, and the gap is wide. Ride-hailing across the centre is cheap; the same trip at 18:00 can double in time and price.

Land, sleep, then sightsee. Nairobi sits at about 1,795 m and the first day is not the day to sprint.

Traffic decides your day. Build 45–90 minutes between the centre and Karen or the park gate at peak, and never schedule a tight connection to a domestic flight at Wilson.

Cash is still useful for small stops, but cards work in most hotels, museums and larger restaurants. Keep small notes for tips.

Buy a local eSIM or data plan at the airport if your home plan does not roam cheaply; ride-hailing and bookings both run on data.

Most travellers leave Nairobi for the Mara, Amboseli or the Rift Valley lakes. If you have a spare day before flying home, the coast is a short flight away and pairs well with a safari.
