Where to stay in Nairobi: best neighborhoods and hotels

Which area is best to stay in Nairobi depends on why you are here. For a first visit of one or two nights, Westlands gives you the widest choice of restaurants and bars within walking distance, and Kilimani next door gives similar access at lower prices. If the national park, the Giraffe Centre or the elephant orphanage is your priority, stay in Karen or Langata so you are not crossing the city at dawn. If you land late and fly out early, book near JKIA and skip the city centre entirely.

The city centre (CBD) is a business district, not a tourist base: it empties at night, and most visitors find the western suburbs easier. Budget travellers do well in Kilimani, Ngara and around the university, where hostels and guesthouses cluster.

Prices are 2026 estimates for a double room in high season, booked ahead. Distances are road distances; Nairobi traffic can double the time.

Westlands is the default for visitors who want an evening on foot. Sarit Centre and Westgate malls anchor the area, and the streets around them hold everything from Kenyan grills to Indian, Ethiopian and Japanese kitchens. Hotels range from business chains to boutique stays. It is busy and noisy, and the pavements are uneven, but you can walk to dinner and back.

Kilimani and Lavington sit just south of Westlands and offer the same restaurants at lower rents, plus quieter residential streets. Yaya Centre is the local hub. This is a good base for a stay of a week or more, or for anyone working remotely.

Karen and Langata are green, low-rise and spread out. You are close to the Nairobi National Park main gate, the Sheldrick elephant orphanage and the Giraffe Centre, which is why safari operators often put guests here for the first night. You need a car or ride-hailing for everything; there is little within walking distance.

The CBD has the cheapest hotels and the main bus and matatu terminals, useful if you leave for Mombasa or Nakuru by road. It is not a pleasant evening base, and most travellers move west after one night.

Embakasi, around Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, is a strip of airport hotels with shuttles. Choose it only if your layover is short or your flight leaves before dawn. Wilson Airport, used for Masai Mara and Amboseli flights, is on the other side of the city near Langata, so a safari that starts at Wilson pairs better with Karen than with an airport hotel.

Gigiri and Village Market suit families, embassy staff and UN visitors: quiet, secure, with a good mall, but far from everything else.

Nairobi is mid-priced by global standards: cheaper than London or New York, more expensive than most of East Africa outside safari lodges. The figures below are 2026 estimates and exclude the 16% VAT and any service charge, which are usually included in quoted rates.

Book the first night before you land. Drivers wait in the arrivals hall at JKIA, and having an address makes the transfer simple; see the airport transfer page for options and fares.

Use ride-hailing rather than street taxis, and agree the fare or check the app price before you get in. Matatus are cheap but crowded and follow their own routes; they are not the easiest first-day option.

Do not walk after dark outside the main mall and restaurant strips, and keep your phone out of sight in traffic. This is ordinary city caution, not a reason to avoid Nairobi.

Check whether your hotel runs a generator or inverter. Power cuts happen, and a backup matters if you are working.

If you fly to the Mara from Wilson Airport, a hotel in Langata or Karen can cut a 60-minute cross-city drive to 15 minutes on the morning of your flight.

Pay by card at hotels and malls; keep small shilling notes for tips, matatus and markets.
