Liberia itineraries: 1 week, 2 weeks and 3 weeks

Liberia rewards a slow, short route. Roads outside Monrovia are slow and the dry season is the only realistic window, so pick one coast stop and one inland or forest stop rather than trying to loop the country.

Book the shape of the trip before you book anything else. Confirm your visa route and yellow-fever card, then decide whether you are doing the coast only or coast plus forest. Only after that should you lock hotels and a driver, because the driver determines what is actually reachable in your window.

For 7 days, land in Monrovia and stay 3 nights: Providence Island, the Ducor Palace ruins, the National Museum on Broad Street and the Waterside market fill two days comfortably. Move to Robertsport for 3 nights for surf, beaches and Lake Piso, then return to Monrovia for 1 night before your flight. A day trip to Blue Lake or Firestone fits the Monrovia block if you have a spare morning.

For 10 days, keep the coast block but cut Monrovia to 2 nights at the start, then go inland to Gbarnga for 2 nights and Kpatawee falls, returning to Monrovia for 2 nights. This is the shortest version that includes forest, and it needs a car and driver for the whole trip.

For 14 days, start in Freetown and work down: peninsula beaches, Tiwai Island, then cross into Liberia and run Monrovia and Robertsport. Arrange the Liberian visa before travel and cross at the Mano River bridge by day. For 21 days, add Harper in the far south-east or East Nimba in the north — both are long road days or a domestic flight, and both are dry-season only.

Prices, road times and opening hours change; treat every timing here as a planning estimate and confirm locally. Fuel, vehicle condition and police checkpoints all slow road travel, and a leg that looks short on a map can take most of a day.

Monrovia is the only place with a wide choice of hotels and restaurants; outside it, book ahead and expect simple guesthouses. Carry cash in Liberian dollars and US dollars, and read up on tipping before you go. Surf at Robertsport runs October–April, with strong currents year-round, so swim near others and ask locally about the day's conditions.

Sapo National Park is operator-only and typically 3–5 nights; East Nimba is 2 nights and mainly for birds and mountain forest. If your dates fall outside December–March, drop the forest entirely and keep the trip to Monrovia and the coast.
