Where to stay in Liberia: best areas and types of hotel

For a first trip, stay in Monrovia and split your nights between two areas: Mamba Point for the ocean-front hotels, embassies and restaurants, and Sinkor for mid-range hotels, cafés and supermarkets. Both are walkable in daylight and a short taxi ride from the city centre.

Add 2-3 nights at Robertsport if you surf or want beach time; it is the only coastal base with a reliable cluster of places to sleep. Everything else in Liberia is a dry-season trip with a 4x4, a driver and guesthouses booked through an operator.

Monrovia is the only city with a real choice of accommodation. Mamba Point sits on the peninsula west of the centre, close to the water, the diplomatic quarter and several long-running hotels and restaurants. Sinkor, inland along Tubman Boulevard, has the widest mid-range supply, plus supermarkets, banks and cafés. Central Monrovia around Broad Street is the historic core: markets, government buildings and cheap guesthouses, busier and less comfortable at night.

Robertsport, about 3-4 hours northwest by road, is a small surf town on the Atlantic with a handful of guesthouses, surf camps and beach lodges. Buchanan and Harper have very limited accommodation; treat them as stopovers arranged in advance, not places to turn up and choose.

Monrovia has international-standard hotels with generators, air conditioning and security, mid-range business hotels, and small guesthouses. Prices are quoted in US dollars as often as Liberian dollars, and both currencies circulate. Expect roughly US$60-150 for a good Monrovia hotel room and US$20-50 for a simple guesthouse; these are 2026 estimates, so confirm when you book.

Outside the capital, rooms are simpler: fans rather than air conditioning, bucket or tank water, and patchy mains power. Ask directly about a generator, a water tank, mosquito nets and whether the room has a private bathroom. A guesthouse that answers those four questions clearly is usually the better-run one.

Book Monrovia ahead for the dry season, roughly November to April, when visiting peaks and the better hotels fill with aid workers, business travellers and conference guests. A few weeks ahead is usually enough outside a big event; check whether anything large is on in the city before you fix dates.

Robertsport is small, so reserve surf camps and beach lodges before you travel in the October-April window. In the wet season, May to October, rooms are easier to find and cheaper, but roads to Robertsport and beyond deteriorate and some places close or run reduced service. Confirm by phone or message before committing, and never assume a provincial guesthouse has a room without asking.

Carry cash. Cards work at some Monrovia hotels but not at guesthouses, and ATMs are unreliable outside the capital. Pay in US dollars or Liberian dollars; agree the rate if a price is quoted in the other currency.

Ask about security: a guarded compound, a locked gate and staff on site at night are normal expectations in Monrovia. For health, check your yellow-fever card and malaria precautions before booking rural stays, and take travel insurance that covers medical evacuation, since serious care means leaving the country.

For connectivity, buy a local SIM or eSIM on arrival; hotel Wi-Fi in Monrovia is usable but slow, and provincial guesthouses often have none. Plugs are US-style types A and B at 120 V, so bring an adapter if you travel from the UK, Europe or Australia.
