Liberia has limited tourist infrastructure: roads outside the Monrovia area are slow, unpaved in places and can become impassable in the long rainy season. Trips break on road times and on arriving without enough cash. The rules that apply everywhere: travel in the dry season, arrange a driver through your hotel, carry US dollars and Liberian dollars, and avoid travelling after dark.

Safety

  • Monrovia: do not walk at night, keep valuables out of sight, and use a driver arranged by your hotel.
  • Roads: avoid driving after dark; accidents and poor roads are the main risk.
  • Sea: strong currents on most beaches.
  • Emergency numbers vary and may not always connect: save your hotel's, driver's and insurer's numbers, and check your government's advice page.
  • Health: see a travel clinic well before you fly about vaccinations and malaria prevention, and check whether a yellow-fever vaccination certificate is required for your passport and route, including transits.

Liberia borders Sierra Leone, Guinea and Côte d'Ivoire; Accra and Abidjan are the usual air connections.
