How to get to Liberia: airports, flights and border crossings

Book a flight to Monrovia Roberts International (ROB). It is the only Liberian airport with regular service from outside West Africa, so every route from North America, Europe, Australia or New Zealand involves at least one connection — usually through Accra, Abidjan, Nairobi, Casablanca or Brussels.

If you are already in the region, Spriggs Payne (MLW) in the city handles some regional and domestic flights. Land crossings from Guinea, Sierra Leone and Côte d'Ivoire work, but they are slow, sometimes unpaved, and best done in daylight during the dry season with a visa arranged in advance.

Roberts International (ROB) sits about 50 km east of central Monrovia. It is the country's long-haul gateway and the airport most travellers will use. Allow one to two hours for the transfer into the city depending on traffic and road conditions — arrange a pickup with your hotel, since finding a reliable taxi at the airport after dark is harder than it looks.

Spriggs Payne (MLW) is closer to the city centre and serves regional and domestic traffic. It is not a long-haul arrival point.

There are no nonstop flights from the US, UK, Canada, Australia or New Zealand. Typical routings connect through a West African hub or a European or North African hub. Schedules change often, so confirm the current operator and days of operation before booking.

Liberia requires a visa for most visitors. Where Liberia has no embassy, an e-visa or visa-on-arrival route may be available — confirm the current rules with the nearest Liberian mission or the immigration authority before you book. A yellow-fever vaccination certificate is required for entry, and you should carry it with your passport.

Your passport should have several blank pages and be valid well beyond your planned stay. Rules and fees change; treat any figure you see online as a 2026 estimate and confirm it at the source.

Liberia shares borders with Guinea, Sierra Leone and Côte d'Ivoire. Road crossings exist and are used, but roads on the Liberian side are often unpaved beyond the main highways, and formalities can take hours. Cross in daylight, in the dry season, and have your visa sorted before you reach the border rather than relying on getting one at the post.
