First trip: one north-coast base (Negril, Montego Bay or Ocho Rios) for 4–5 nights plus 2–3 in the Blue Mountains or on the south coast; switching bases more than once costs whole days on slow roads.

Not field-verified

Jamaica is an independent island about 235 km long where roads are slow, winding and busy, so a 'short' drive takes hours. The tourist north coast and the capital, Kingston, feel like different countries. Choose two bases at most, use licensed transport, and treat crime in parts of Kingston and Montego Bay and hurricane season (June–November) as planning constraints.

Country rules

Inherited by every page below
  • Check entry rules for your passport on official Jamaican government sources before you fly.
  • Cannabis rules are limited and specific: possession above small amounts is illegal, and taking any cannabis out of Jamaica is a serious offence.
  • Use licensed taxis (red PPV number plates) or pre-booked transfers, not unmarked cars.

Etiquette

  • Greet people before asking for anything; courtesy goes a long way.
  • Ask before photographing people, especially vendors.
  • Dress modestly away from the beach.
Christmas–New Year and Easter
Peak season: resorts and flights fill.
Spring break (Mar–Apr)
Negril and Montego Bay fill with student groups.
Hurricane season (Jun–Nov, peak Aug–Oct)
Storms can close airports and ports for days; ferries and small flights are cancelled first.

Money & passes

Cash necessity: 3/5

  • Currency is the Jamaican dollar (JMD); US dollars are widely accepted in tourist areas, often at a poor rate.
  • Cards work in resorts and larger restaurants; markets, cook shops and route taxis want cash in Jamaican dollars.
  • Use ATMs inside banks, supermarkets or malls.

Safety

  • Traffic drives on the left; roads are narrow, twisty and driven fast. Hire a driver if you are not used to it.
  • Crime is concentrated in parts of Kingston and Montego Bay: stay in known areas after dark and follow local advice. States of emergency are sometimes declared in some parishes.
  • Say a firm 'no thanks' to unsolicited guides and sellers and keep walking.
  • Sun and sea: the sun is strong all year; watch for currents and rip tides on unpatrolled beaches, and swim where locals swim.
  • Hurricane season (Jun–Nov): follow local warnings and your airline; if a storm is forecast, leave early or shelter where your accommodation tells you.

Jamaica has direct flights to North America and the UK; regional connections to the rest of the Caribbean often route via hubs.
