Jamaica is an independent island about 235 km long where roads are slow, winding and busy, so a 'short' drive takes hours. The tourist north coast and the capital, Kingston, feel like different countries. Choose two bases at most, use licensed transport, and treat crime in parts of Kingston and Montego Bay and hurricane season (June–November) as planning constraints.

Safety

  • Traffic drives on the left; roads are narrow, twisty and driven fast. Hire a driver if you are not used to it.
  • Crime is concentrated in parts of Kingston and Montego Bay: stay in known areas after dark and follow local advice. States of emergency are sometimes declared in some parishes.
  • Say a firm 'no thanks' to unsolicited guides and sellers and keep walking.
  • Sun and sea: the sun is strong all year; watch for currents and rip tides on unpatrolled beaches, and swim where locals swim.
  • Hurricane season (Jun–Nov): follow local warnings and your airline; if a storm is forecast, leave early or shelter where your accommodation tells you.
