Falmouth is a small Trelawny parish port 31 km east of Montego Bay, founded in 1769 and once a leading sugar, rum and coffee harbour. Its waterfront district is a National Heritage Site of Georgian buildings from the 1760s to 1840. Cruise ships call at a fenced pier; independent travellers come for the town itself, the Luminous Lagoon and Martha Brae rafting nearby.

The town centre is walkable in 15–20 min end to end. Route taxis and buses run along the A1 to Montego Bay and Ocho Rios; agree the fare before you get in. For Martha Brae, the lagoon and beaches you want a taxi, a driver for the day or a rental car — driving is on the left.

Watch out

Safety

Falmouth is a small town and generally calm by day; the real risks are unlit roads at night, unlicensed taxis and petty theft around the market and pier area. Keep cash split, avoid walking alone after dark, and use a driver you booked.
  • The cruise pier is fenced and open only to cruise passengers; local Jamaicans are kept out. Do not expect to shop there as an independent traveller.
  • Prices at the pier and in the craft market are negotiable; ask the total before you commit.
  • Small vendors often cannot take cards for small amounts and may give a poor rate on USD — carry JMD cash.
  • Roads are narrow and unlit at night; avoid driving after dark if you are new to left-hand driving.
  • Confirm your hotel is open and undamaged before booking in 2026.
