Hong Kong is small, dense and hilly. Everything on a first visit sits within 30 minutes of the harbour by MTR, ferry or taxi, so one bed is enough. The trips that go wrong are the ones that ignore the weather: Signal No. 8 or a black rainstorm closes transport and shops, and July to September is the season for both. Treat it as its own destination: separate immigration from mainland China, its own money (HKD) and its own emergency system.

Keep one bed; do the Peak on a clear morning, Kowloon on the evening you want the harbour lights.

  • Put the Peak on your first clear morning, not on a fixed day; haze and cloud can hide the view.
  • Do Mong Kok and the markets in the late afternoon and evening; do temples and the Peak in the morning.
  • Going on to mainland China needs its own visa or entry permission: plan the border day separately.
  • Avoid Lunar New Year week and the first week of October (China's Golden Week): hotels and the Peak Tram queue at their worst.

  • Hong Kong has its own immigration control: entry to Hong Kong does not permit entry to mainland China, and the reverse. Check the Immigration Department list for your passport.
  • Buy an Octopus card or use a contactless bank card at MTR gates; single-journey tickets cost the same but queue at machines.
  • When Typhoon Signal No. 8 or a Black rainstorm warning is issued, most public transport and many businesses stop: stay where you are and re-plan the next day.

Etiquette

  • Stand on the right on escalators and let people pass on the left; queue for MTR doors and taxis.
  • Temples: dress modestly, do not point at statues or step on thresholds; incense is offered, not required.
  • No eating or drinking on the MTR (fines apply).
  • Do not photograph people at close range in markets without asking.

Cash necessity: 2/5

  • Currency is the Hong Kong dollar (HKD, HK$). Cards and Octopus work in most places; cha chaan teng, markets and some taxis want cash.
  • ATMs are everywhere, including 24-hour machines in MTR stations and convenience stores; check your bank's foreign-withdrawal fee.
  • Restaurants often add a 10% service charge; tipping on top is not expected.

Safety

  • Weather is the main risk: check the Hong Kong Observatory before every outdoor day from June to October; Signal No. 8 or a Black rainstorm warning stops transport.
  • Heat and humidity (May–Sep): plan an AC stop every 60–90 minutes; hills such as the Peak and Lugard Road are steep.
  • Pickpocketing is uncommon but happens in crowded markets and MTR carriages; keep phones and wallets in front pockets.
  • Emergency: 999 for police, fire and ambulance.
  • Some governments publish travel advice for Hong Kong: read your own government's advice before you go.

Hong Kong sits between Japan, Vietnam and mainland China: flights to Osaka, Tokyo and Hanoi are short; mainland border crossings need their own entry permission.
