First trip: Quito 3 nights (it sits at about 2,850 m), then either the Andes (Cotopaxi, Baños, Cuenca) for 4–5 or the Galápagos for 4–7 by air; keep coastal stops to what current advice allows.

Not field-verified

Ecuador is small, but it packs Andes, Amazon, coast and the Galápagos, and each needs its own transfer. Trips break on altitude (Quito at about 2,850 m, Cotopaxi higher), on Galápagos logistics that must be booked ahead, and on security: the coastal provinces, including Guayaquil, have seen serious crime and states of emergency. Base in Quito, go up slowly, and treat the Galápagos as a separate trip with its own rules.

Country rules

Inherited by every page below
  • Check entry rules for your passport with Ecuador's Ministry of Foreign Affairs or an Ecuadorian consulate.
  • The Galápagos has its own entry controls: a transit control card bought at the airport before departure, a national park entrance fee, and inspections for food and plants. Check official Galápagos rules before booking.
  • Several coastal provinces (including Guayas, where Guayaquil is) are under official warnings and periodic states of emergency; read your government's advice before routing through them.

Etiquette

  • Greet with buenos días and a handshake; use usted with strangers.
  • In the Galápagos, stay 2 m from animals, never touch or feed them, and keep to marked trails with a licensed guide where required.
  • Ask before photographing people at markets.
Carnival (February or March)
Water and foam fights in the Andes; domestic travel peak.
Fiestas de Quito (early December)
Celebrations and crowds in Quito.
Christmas and summer holidays (June–August, December–January)
Galápagos cruises and hotels book up.

Money & passes

Cash necessity: 3/5

  • Currency is the US dollar (USD, $). Bring small notes: $50 and $100 bills are often refused.
  • Cards work in larger hotels and restaurants; markets, buses and small towns need cash.
  • The Galápagos national park fee is paid in cash on arrival; check the current amount before you fly.

Safety

  • Emergency: 911 (ECU 911).
  • The UK FCDO advises against all but essential travel to the coastal provinces of Esmeraldas, Manabí, Santa Elena, Guayas and El Oro, and to areas near the Colombian border (with some exceptions): check before routing via Guayaquil or the coast.
  • States of emergency and curfews have been declared in several provinces at short notice; follow local news.
  • Use registered or app taxis, especially at night and from bus terminals.
  • Volcanoes (Cotopaxi, Tungurahua and others) are active: check alerts before hiking.

Ecuador borders Colombia and Peru; Quito and Guayaquil have direct flights to both.
