Esmeraldas is a working port and provincial capital on Ecuador's northern coast, about 5–9 h by bus from Quito. The city has a gritty downtown, a municipal beach at Playa de las Palmas and a regional archaeology museum. Most travellers use it as a transport stop for the beach villages north and south, or skip it entirely. Check current travel advice before booking: the US State Department has at times placed Esmeraldas province at a high advisory level, and this changes.

Taxis and mototaxis cover the city cheaply; agree the fare first. Buses from the Trans Esmeraldas terminal by the main park run to Atacames, Súa and Same every few minutes. For Mompiche and further north, check connections in advance.
