Croatia's coast is long and thin, so trips break when they zigzag between islands and the interior. Fly into one end and out of the other, and let ferries do the island work. July and August bring heat, cruise crowds and full ferries; May–June and September are the planning sweet spot.

  • Book car ferries and popular catamarans ahead in summer; foot passengers still need to be early for the busiest routes.

  • Summer heat and sun on stone old towns: plan midday shade and water.
  • Sea: watch for sea urchins on rocky beaches; water shoes help.
  • Wildfires can close roads in dry summers; follow local instructions.
  • Pickpockets work the crowded old towns of Split and Dubrovnik in peak season.
