Turkmenistan is a guided-trip country: you need an approved invitation (visa support letter) from a licensed Turkmen operator before you fly, and independent travel is not what the system expects. Book an operator first, plan 3–4 nights in Ashgabat, and treat every timing on this site as a draft to confirm with them.
Turkmenistan is one of the most closed countries on earth. Visas are issued against a letter from a licensed operator, the approved route is fixed in advance, photography is restricted around government buildings, and cash is the only money that works. The trips that go wrong are the ones planned like Turkey or Georgia: no letter, no registration, no local cash. Start with the letter, keep the plan simple (Ashgabat and one or two excursions), and let your operator confirm every permit.

Keep one hotel; your operator registers you and books every excursion.
- Order the invitation letter first (allow several weeks), then the visa, then the flight; do not book a flight before the letter is approved.
- Fly in and out of Ashgabat (ASB): many flights land or leave in the small hours, so ask your operator to meet you and hold the first night's room.
- Spring (Apr–May) and autumn (Sep–Oct) are the workable seasons; Jun–Aug reaches 40°C in the desert.

Country rules
- Almost all tourist visas need an invitation letter from a licensed Turkmen operator, issued before you apply; arrivals without one are refused boarding or entry.
- Independent travel is not the expected model: itineraries are declared to the authorities, and travel outside Ashgabat needs permits your operator arranges.
- Do not photograph government buildings, presidential palaces, military sites, police, airports or border areas; ask your guide before raising a camera.
- Foreign cards and ATMs rarely work: bring enough clean, undamaged US dollar or euro notes for the whole trip and change only through official channels.
Etiquette
- Dress modestly: covered shoulders and knees, especially at mosques and memorials; women cover their hair at a mosque.
- Do not criticise the president or the government in public or online; images of the leadership are everywhere and are treated with formal respect.
- Shoes come off in homes and at mosque prayer areas.
- Alcohol is sold in licensed shops and hotels; drinking in public is frowned on.

- Currency is the Turkmen manat (TMT). The official rate and the street rate differ widely: do not change money on the street; ask your operator how to change.
- Bring US dollars or euros in new, undamaged notes; worn or marked notes can be refused.
- Hotels and a few shops take foreign cards; do not plan around it.

Safety
- Check your own government's travel advice before you book; several governments publish a high level of caution and limited consular help for Turkmenistan.
- Emergency numbers are commonly given as 101 fire, 102 police and 103 ambulance; confirm with your operator or hotel, because 112 is not the emergency number here.
- Heat (Jun–Aug) reaches 40°C: plan indoor hours 12:00–16:00, drink bottled water.
- Register with your hotel on arrival (your operator handles it) and carry your passport and visa; police checks happen.
Turkmenistan sits between Iran, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan and the Caspian; overland border crossings are opened only with prior permits and are not covered here.
