Bayramaly
Use Bayramaly as a base for Merv and Gonur Depe: one night is enough if you have a guide and car; two nights if you want to see both sites without rushing.
Bayramaly is a small, dusty town in Mary Province, Turkmenistan, that exists mainly as the nearest accommodation hub for the UNESCO site of Merv and the Bronze Age settlement of Gonur Depe. It has no major sights of its own beyond the Tomb of Ahmed Sanjar, but its location makes it a practical stop for anyone exploring the region's ancient history. Most travellers arrive as part of a guided tour and stay one or two nights.

- Central Asia ↗Keep every hotel registration slip or its e-registration record until you leave Uzbekistan and Tajikistan; border officers can ask for proof of where you slept and fine gaps.
- Central Asia ↗Land borders between Central Asian states open and shut with politics and demarcation deals; confirm the exact post is open to foreigners the week you cross.
- Turkmenistan ↗Almost all tourist visas need an invitation letter from a licensed Turkmen operator, issued before you apply; arrivals without one are refused boarding or entry.
- Turkmenistan ↗Independent travel is not the expected model: itineraries are declared to the authorities, and travel outside Ashgabat needs permits your operator arranges.
- Turkmenistan ↗Do not photograph government buildings, presidential palaces, military sites, police, airports or border areas; ask your guide before raising a camera.
- Turkmenistan ↗Foreign cards and ATMs rarely work: bring enough clean, undamaged US dollar or euro notes for the whole trip and change only through official channels.

Getting around
Taxis and tour vehicles are the only practical option. The town is walkable but the sites (Merv, Gonur Depe) are 10–30 km away. Arrange transport through your tour operator.

Safety
- Independent travel is not straightforward: you need a visa support letter from a licensed operator. Confirm all transport and entry with them.
- Summer heat is severe: carry water, sun protection and a hat.
- The Tomb of Ahmed Sanjar is part of the Merv archaeological park; check opening hours with your guide.
- ATMs and card payment are unreliable; carry enough manat (or US dollars) for small purchases.
