Timor-LesteTimor-Leste / Timór Lorosa'e
Plan Timor-Leste as Dili plus one or two long days out: it is a young country with few flights, thin infrastructure and US dollars in cash — the ground, not the sights, sets the pace.
Timor-Leste has one international airport that matters, a handful of flights a day, roads that wash out in the wet season and very few cash machines outside Dili. The trips that work sleep in Dili, hire a driver for anything beyond the city, carry US dollars in small notes and leave slack for delays. Hotels, drivers and dive operators do the logistics; arrive with them arranged.

Routes that work
Dili, 4 nights
Keep one bed in Dili; a day out is a driver, not a bus.
- Fly into Dili, sleep there, then decide the road days once you have seen the weather: the wet season closes roads without notice.
- Book the outbound flight with a full day of slack: schedules are thin and cancellations leave few alternatives.
- Do not plan overland to Indonesian West Timor as a tight leg: the border crossing has its own hours and rules.
Arrive
Time math
- 3 days
- Dili 3: waterfront and market, resistance sites, Cristo Rei
- 5 days
- Dili 3 + one coast or dive day + one slow day
- 8 days
- Dili 4 + highlands or the east coast by driver, with a spare day for road delays
Country rules
- Check entry rules and visa-on-arrival conditions on official Timor-Leste government sources only; fees and rules change.
- The currency is the US dollar. Carry small notes (1, 5, 10 and 20); change for a 50 or 100 is often not available.
- Medical care is limited: carry travel insurance that covers evacuation.
Etiquette
- Dress modestly outside beach areas; cover shoulders and knees in churches.
- The country is largely Catholic: behave quietly in churches and at religious processions.
- Ask before photographing people, especially at memorials and funerals.
- Greet people; a handshake and a smile go a long way.
- Nov–Apr (wet season)
- Roads wash out; flights and boats cancelled at short notice.
- Nov 12 (Santa Cruz remembrance) and Nov 28 (Independence Day)
- National days: crowds, processions and road closures in Dili.
- Easter
- Processions and closures; many businesses shut Good Friday and Easter Monday.
- May 20 (Restoration of Independence)
- Public holiday; events in Dili.
Money & passes
Cash necessity: 5/5
- US dollars in small notes; small local centavo coins are used for change.
- Cash machines are few and can be empty; bring most of your cash and keep a reserve.
- Cards work in few hotels and dive shops and may carry a surcharge; do not rely on them.

Safety
- Petty theft happens; keep valuables out of sight, do not walk alone at night, and use a car after dark.
- Roads: poor surfaces, animals, and landslides in the wet season. Do not drive at night outside Dili.
- Sea and rivers: crocodiles are present; do not swim where locals or your operator tell you not to.
- Dengue is present; use repellent. Medical facilities are limited.
- Emergency: 112 for police, ambulance and fire; response is slow: ask your hotel to confirm local numbers.
- Check your own government's travel advice for Timor-Leste before you book.
Timor-Leste connects by air to Darwin, Bali, Singapore and Jakarta (schedules change: check).
