Major city · Timor-Leste

Lospalos

Use Lospalos as a base for the eastern end of Timor-Leste: one night to reach Tutuala and Jaco Island, or a longer stay to explore Nino Konis National Park.

Lospalos is the main market town in the far east of Timor-Leste, a staging post for the drive to Tutuala and Jaco Island. The town itself has a few colonial-era buildings and a daily market, but the real draw is the surrounding landscape: limestone caves, forest trails and the coast. Most travellers pass through for one night on the way to the eastern tip.

Watch out

Safety

Lospalos is generally safe, but roads are poor and medical facilities are basic. Carry a first-aid kit and travel insurance. Avoid walking alone after dark in unlit areas.
  • Roads east of Lospalos are rough: a 4WD is essential in the wet season.
  • Buses fill up early: book your seat in advance, especially for the evening departure to Dili.
  • ATMs are scarce: bring enough US dollars cash from Dili.
