Saudi Arabia is huge and mostly reached by air. A first trip is Riyadh in winter, with Diriyah as the main sight. Three things decide the trip: the visa (apply only on the official portal), the season (45°C in summer) and the rules (modest dress, no alcohol, prayer-time closures). Some governments advise against travel near the Yemen border and warn about missile and drone attacks: read your own government's advice before you book and again before you fly.

Regions
Capital and major cities
Use Jeddah as the Red Sea gateway: two nights for the old town of Al-Balad and the corniche, or as the arrival airport for Umrah and Hajj.
Mecca is closed to non-Muslims: only Muslims can enter the central area around the Grand Mosque, so plan this page only if you are travelling as a Muslim pilgrim.
Medina is open to visitors of all faiths, but the Prophet's Mosque and its central area are for Muslims only: expect a city visit with restricted zones.
Dammam is a business and transit stop on the Gulf coast: use it as a base for the Eastern Province or the King Fahd Causeway to Bahrain, not for a long stay.
Go to AlUla for two to three nights for Hegra's rock tombs and the desert scenery, best from October to March.

Riyadh, 3 nights
Keep one bed; Diriyah is an afternoon-and-dinner trip.
- Fly in and out of Riyadh (RUH); the weekend is Friday and Saturday, and Friday is the quiet day.
- Avoid Ramadan and the Eid holidays unless you accept limited daytime options.
- Plan outdoor sights for mornings and after sunset; keep midday for museums and malls.

Country rules
- Apply for the tourist eVisa only on the official visa portal (visa.visitsaudi.com); lookalike sites charge extra.
- Dress modestly in public: loose clothing covering shoulders and knees; women are not required to wear an abaya but should cover up.
- Alcohol is banned: do not bring it in, and do not buy it from anyone.
- Shops close for about 20–30 minutes at prayer times; plan around them.

Safety
- Heat is the main risk: avoid midday sun April–October; carry water.
- Drug laws are strict; some medicines are controlled: carry prescriptions and check the list.
