Abha

2–3 nights in summer (May–Sep) for green mountains, cable cars and stone villages; a day trip is too short for the Asir highlands.

Abha is the capital of Asir province and Saudi Arabia's cool-weather escape, sitting at about 2,200 m. Its terraced mountains, foggy mornings and traditional stone villages make it a summer alternative to the Gulf heat. Most visitors fly in from Riyadh or Jeddah and spend 2–3 nights visiting the cable car, Rijal Almaa and the surrounding peaks.

Getting around

Taxis and ride-hail apps (Uber, Careem) are the main option; no public bus network within the city. A car is useful for Rijal Almaa and the mountain roads.

Watch out

Safety

Abha is safe for tourists; the main risks are mountain driving and fog. Dress modestly and follow public-behaviour rules as in the rest of Saudi Arabia.
  • Fog can be thick in winter and early morning; drive with headlights.
  • Mountain roads are winding and narrow in places; allow extra time.
  • Some attractions close during Ramadan or for prayer times; check ahead.
