Country rules
- Entry rules are set by each island's government, not the UK: check the Saint Helena, Ascension or Tristan da Cunha government requirements for your passport (proof of onward travel, insurance and accommodation are typically required).
- Ascension has no right of abode; visitors need prior permission from the Ascension Island Government before travelling.
- Tristan da Cunha requires prior approval from the Island Council, and berths on the few ships from Cape Town are limited.
- Carry travel insurance that includes medical evacuation; hospital facilities are limited and evacuation is long and expensive.
Etiquette
- Communities are small: greeting people you pass on roads and paths is normal.
- Respect private land and the protected areas and wildlife rules, especially around turtle and seabird nesting sites.
- Ask before photographing people and homes.

- Saint Helena and Ascension use the Saint Helena pound (SHP), at par with pound sterling (GBP); sterling notes are accepted, but Saint Helena notes are not accepted outside the territory. Tristan da Cunha uses pound sterling.
- Card acceptance and ATMs are limited; bring enough pounds for the stay and ask your accommodation about card payment before relying on it.

Safety
- Remoteness is the main risk: medical care is basic, and serious cases require evacuation by air or sea.
- Hiking: steep, exposed paths and changeable weather; tell someone your route and carry water and a jacket.
- Flights can be delayed or diverted by wind and weather; keep spare days and medication.
- Sea swimming is limited by currents and swell; follow local advice.
