Self-drive a loop from Windhoek over 10–14 nights with 2 nights per stop (Sossusvlei, Swakopmund, Damaraland, Etosha), driving no more than 4–5 hours a day and never after dark.
Namibia is a self-drive country on gravel: most of the route is on unpaved roads where speed, not distance, causes rollovers, and a day planned at motorway pace ends in the dark. The rules that apply everywhere: drive on the left, keep to 80 km/h or less on gravel, carry water and two spare tyres, fill up at every fuel station you pass, and be at your lodge or inside the park camp before sunset. Lodges and campsites in Sossusvlei and Etosha are limited and book out months ahead in the dry season.

Time math
- 7 days
- Windhoek 1 + Sossusvlei 2 + Swakopmund 2 + back to Windhoek 1 (plus a travel day)
- 10 days
- Windhoek 1 + Sossusvlei 2 + Swakopmund 2 + Damaraland 2 + Etosha 2 + Windhoek 1
- 14 days
- The 10-day loop with 3 nights in Etosha and 2 in the Kalahari or at a Waterberg stop on the way back
Country rules
- Check visa and entry rules for your passport on official Namibian government sources before booking; requirements for some nationalities have changed recently.
- Taking a rental car into Botswana, South Africa, Zambia or Zimbabwe needs written permission from the rental company and the right papers; ask when you book.
- Etosha gates open at sunrise and close at sunset: you must be inside a camp or out of the park by closing time.
Etiquette
- Ask before photographing people, including in Himba villages; visit with a guide who has a relationship with the community.
- Greet people before asking a question; a handshake is common.
- Keep to marked tracks in the desert: tyre marks on gravel plains last for years.
- Peak dry season (Jul–Oct)
- Sossusvlei and Etosha lodges book out; reserve months ahead.
- Summer rains (about Nov–Apr)
- Heat, storms and flooded dry riverbeds on gravel roads; animals disperse away from Etosha's waterholes.
- South African school holidays (Dec–Jan)
- Regional visitors fill campsites and lodges.
Money & passes
Cash necessity: 3/5
- Currency is the Namibian dollar (NAD, N$), pegged 1:1 to the South African rand; rand is accepted in Namibia, but Namibian dollars are not accepted in South Africa.
- Cards work in Windhoek, Swakopmund and most lodges; carry cash for fuel, tips and small shops in remote areas, where card machines may be down.
- Fuel is served by attendants; tip them in cash.

Safety
- Gravel roads: slow down before bends and when passing, never brake hard on loose surfaces, and keep headlights on in dust.
- No driving after dark: animals on the road and long distances without help make night driving the main self-drive risk.
- Carry plenty of drinking water and snacks; mobile coverage disappears for long stretches between towns.
- Windhoek: do not walk alone after dark and keep valuables out of sight in parked cars.
- Emergency numbers vary by area: save your lodge's, rental company's and your insurer's numbers before you set off.
- Health: see a travel clinic well before you fly about vaccinations and malaria prevention, and check whether a yellow-fever vaccination certificate is required for your passport and route, including transits.
Namibia links by road and short flights to Botswana (Chobe, Okavango), Victoria Falls and South Africa; the Zambezi (Caprivi) strip is the overland corridor east.
