Country rules

- Do not photograph government buildings, police, the military or border posts.
- Bring enough US dollars in small, clean notes; do not rely on ATMs or foreign cards outside Victoria Falls, Harare and lodges.

- Greet people before asking a question; handshakes are common.
- Avoid political discussions with people you have just met.
- Ask before photographing people.

- Heavy storms, heat and some bush camps closed; roads in the parks can be impassable.

- Spray can hide the falls and soak you; the view is bigger from the air.

- US dollars are widely used; the local currency (Zimbabwe Gold, ZiG, since 2024) has replaced earlier currencies, and rules change often, so check before you travel.
- Bring small US dollar notes: change is often short, and damaged or old notes may be refused.
- Cards work at many lodges, hotels and larger shops in Victoria Falls and Harare; rural areas are cash.

Safety
- No driving after dark: potholes, livestock and unlit vehicles make night roads the main risk.
- Expect police roadblocks; keep documents ready and stay polite.
- Stay away from political gatherings and demonstrations.
- Victoria Falls town: elephants and other animals walk through town at night; use a taxi after dark.
- Emergency numbers vary: save your lodge's and operator's numbers and your insurer's evacuation line.
- Health: see a travel clinic well before you fly about vaccinations and malaria prevention, and check whether a yellow-fever vaccination certificate is required for your passport and route, including transits.
Victoria Falls is the crossroads of the KAZA area: Livingstone (Zambia) is across the bridge and Kasane (Botswana) is a short road transfer.
