Mutare

Give Mutare 1 night as a base for the Bvumba Mountains, or 2 nights if you add Cecil Kop and the museum: it is a stop, not a destination.

Mutare is Zimbabwe's third city and the gateway to the Eastern Highlands, 4-5 h by road from Harare and about 45 min from the Mozambique border. The city itself is small and walkable; the reason to come is the Bvumba cloud forest above it, plus a game reserve and museum inside town. Most travellers use it as one or two nights between Harare and the highlands.

  • Africa ↗When a route touches a yellow-fever country — even a transit of 12 hours or more — keep the original yellow card (ICVP) in your hand luggage; health desks and airlines can refuse boarding or entry without it.
  • Africa ↗Nine African countries on this site have no trip line because governments advise against travel; several others have no-go regions. Read your government's advice for every country on the route before paying deposits.
  • Southern Africa ↗A rental car may leave its home country only with the rental company's cross-border letter, the registration papers and paid road taxes at each post; driving into Zambia, Zimbabwe, Mozambique or Angola without them ends at the border.
  • Southern Africa ↗Across the subregion, plan every road leg to arrive before sunset: livestock, wildlife, pedestrians and unlit trucks make night driving the main cause of serious visitor accidents.
  • Zimbabwe ↗Check visa and entry rules for your passport on official Zimbabwean government sources; if you will cross to Zambia, ask about the KAZA UniVisa and whether it is available to you.
  • Zimbabwe ↗Do not photograph government buildings, police, the military or border posts.
  • Zimbabwe ↗Bring enough US dollars in small, clean notes; do not rely on ATMs or foreign cards outside Victoria Falls, Harare and lodges.

Getting around

The centre is small enough to walk. Minibus combis cost about US$0.50 for short hops. Shared taxis to the Bvumba leave from 'E' Avenue when full (about US$5, 45 min) and to Nyanga from 2nd Street (about US$5, 2 h) - go early. A car is the practical way to reach Cecil Kop, the Bvumba and Lake Alexander.

Watch out

Safety

Take the usual Zimbabwe precautions: no valuables on show, no walking after dark, and ask your lodge about the current situation before driving at night.
  • Roads are asphalted but potholes are common, and police roadblocks are frequent: carry your licence and a copy of your papers.
  • The Harare overnight train has been suspended since the pandemic and was still suspended in 2024: check before planning around it.
  • The Bvumba is often in cloud by afternoon: go up in the morning.
  • Cross-border traffic on the A3/A9 is heavy; allow extra time near Sakubva and the border.
