Mauritius is small, but traffic, winding roads and the island's shape make cross-island drives slower than they look, so the coast you sleep on shapes the trip. Each coast has different wind and sea conditions depending on the season. Driving is on the left; a hire car or a driver makes day-trips to Chamarel, Black River Gorges and Port Louis easy. Cyclones are possible roughly November–April.

Country rules

Safety
- Mauritius is generally safe; petty theft from cars and beaches occurs, so do not leave valuables visible.
- Swim only where locals and lifeguards indicate: currents at reef passes can be strong.
- Cyclone warnings are issued in stages; follow hotel and official instructions if one is raised.
- Drive defensively: roads are narrow and winding, and buses and motorbikes overtake.
Mauritius connects by short flights with Réunion, Rodrigues, Madagascar and Seychelles; Réunion is the easiest island to pair.
