Madagascar is bigger than France and its roads are slow: a few hundred kilometres can be a full day, and domestic flights are infrequent and sometimes rescheduled. Pick one region per trip, hire a car with driver rather than self-driving, and keep buffer days before the international flight. Cyclone season (roughly January–March) disrupts the east and north; the dry season (roughly April–November) is the easier time.

  • Book a travel-clinic visit several weeks ahead; ask about malaria prevention and whether a yellow fever vaccination certificate is required for your route.
  • Hire a car with a driver for road trips; self-drive is rarely practical and driving after dark is unsafe.
  • Do not buy or export wildlife, tortoise shell, precious stones without a certificate, or protected plants; enforcement at the airport is strict.

Etiquette

  • Respect fady (local taboos), which vary by village and region; your guide will tell you what is forbidden where.
  • Ask before photographing people and tombs; some burial sites are sacred.
  • French and Malagasy are official languages; a few words of Malagasy (salama, misaotra) are appreciated.

  • Currency is the Malagasy ariary (MGA). Cash is the norm outside larger hotels; ATMs exist in towns but not in national parks or on long road stretches.
  • Carry euros as backup; change them at banks or licensed bureaux.
  • Park entry and compulsory local guides are paid on site in cash in many parks.

Safety

  • Do not travel by road after dark: road conditions and banditry on some rural routes make night driving unsafe.
  • Pickpocketing and bag snatching are common in Antananarivo; use hotel-arranged taxis after dark.
  • Some governments advise against travel to parts of the south-west and some rural areas because of banditry: check your own government's advice before you go.
  • Plague cases occur in some rural areas in some years; check health advice before you go.
