  • Currency is the Malawian kwacha (MWK). Cards work at larger lodges and some hotels; almost everything else is cash.
  • ATMs are in towns and not all accept foreign cards; withdraw in Lilongwe or Blantyre before heading to the lake.
  • Foreign-currency shortages happen; ask your lodges how they want to be paid before you arrive.

Safety

  • No driving after dark: pedestrians, cyclists and livestock on unlit roads are the main risk.
  • Cities: use a known taxi at night and keep valuables out of sight.
  • Fuel shortages can stop road travel; keep a buffer day in the plan.
  • Emergency numbers vary: save your lodge's and your insurer's numbers before you go.
  • Health: see a travel clinic well before you fly about vaccinations and malaria prevention, and check whether a yellow-fever vaccination certificate is required for your passport and route, including transits.
