Lake Malawi
Land in Lilongwe, sleep one night, then go to one lakeshore base for 3–4 nights; do not try two lake bases on a short trip.

The lake is the reason to come, and the road to it is the hard part. Lilongwe is a gateway with a driver, a bank and a bed; Senga Bay and Cape Maclear are the closest bases, Nkhata Bay and Likoma are longer. Book the transfer through your lodge, travel in daylight and keep a spare day for fuel shortages and slow roads.

Arrival night, cash and supplies; the wildlife centre and central market by day.
Closest lake base; about 1.5–2 h by road from Lilongwe.
Lake Malawi National Park; long road day from Lilongwe.
Northern lake; a full day of driving from Lilongwe.
