Lesotho is a mountain kingdom surrounded by South Africa: the whole country sits above 1,000 m, roads climb steep passes, and weather changes fast, with snow possible in winter (June–August). Trips break on a late start at a border post, a vehicle not built for the passes, or a drive that runs into the dark. The rules that apply everywhere: check border-post opening hours, get cross-border permission from your rental company, and drive only in daylight.

  • Check visa and entry rules for your passport on official Lesotho government sources; you also need South African entry to reach it by road.
  • Taking a South African rental car into Lesotho needs a cross-border letter from the rental company; Sani Pass needs a 4x4.
  • Border posts have fixed opening hours; smaller posts close earlier than the main Maseru bridge.

Safety

  • Mountain roads: drive slowly, expect livestock and people on the road, and do not drive after dark.
  • Weather: carry warm layers in every season; storms and cold arrive quickly at altitude.
  • Maseru: take the usual city precautions and use a known taxi at night.
  • Emergency numbers vary: save your lodge's and your insurer's numbers before you go.
  • Health: see a travel clinic well before you fly about vaccinations and malaria prevention, and check whether a yellow-fever vaccination certificate is required for your passport and route, including transits.
