Overview
Maseru is a small, low-rise capital on the border with South Africa. Its sights are close together and few; the trips that go wrong are late-afternoon border crossings, mountain drives that run into the dark, and arrivals that assume a scheduled flight. Safety
- Maseru: use the usual city precautions; keep phones and bags out of sight and use a known taxi at night.
- Mountain roads: drive slowly, expect livestock and people on the road, and do not drive after dark.
- Weather: cold nights and sudden storms at altitude, even in summer; carry a warm layer.
- Emergency numbers vary and may not always connect: save your hotel's, driver's and insurer's numbers and ask your hotel for the local police number.
